29. Why I Go to Church (Even When It’s Hard)
When my family moved just one mile away into a new ward, I didn’t expect to struggle so much. Same building, new faces, unfamiliar dynamics—and for the first time in my life, I questioned why I went to church.
Over time, through scripture study, prayer, and guidance from inspired leaders, I found four reasons why church attendance matters:
1. To Worship Jesus Christ
Church is first and foremost about Him. When I shift my focus to worship, everything else falls into place—no matter the talks, the people, or the imperfections.
2. To Partake of the Sacrament
The sacrament renews my baptismal promises and brings the Spirit back into my life each week. It is a gift of cleansing and connection I don’t want to miss.
3. To Serve and Sustain
Church is not passive. It’s active. By sustaining leaders, serving in callings, and even offering a smile, I fulfill my covenants and follow the Savior’s example.
4. To Learn Together
We aren’t meant to live on spiritual islands. Gathering brings perspectives, testimonies, and experiences that deepen our faith in ways our own family bubbles cannot.
Bonus: To Feel Joy
Elder Patrick Kearon reminded us that we are members of the “Church of Joy.” Each Sabbath can bring joy when we gather, partake of the sacrament, and worship with reverence and gratitude.
For me, the “why” of church isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about choosing joy, worship, and the Savior every week.
